The Mario Bros

The Mario Bros were always my favorite video game characters. Back in the middle and late 80s when it seemed the Nintendo Entertainment System was more popular with kids than TV or sports combined, the Mario Bros were rivaling Mickey Mouse in fame. In fact, I personally spent many more hours as a kid hanging out with Mario and Luigi than I even did with that silly rodent. The Mario Bros eat mushrooms, grow big and throw fireballs. What does Mickey Mouse ever do?

When they made a movie based on the Mario Bros, I wasn’t surprised at all even though at the time a movie based on a video game was a new concept. Today of course movies based on video games are coming out all the time, at it seems the Mario Bros set a trend. Even though the Mario Bros movie was nothing short of terrible, fans of the Nintendo games like myself enjoyed the novelty of it.

The first Mario Bros game was entertaining to be sure, but when the sequel Super Mario Bros came out the video game brothers quickly became legends and the late 20th century post-industrial culture icons they are now. I spent so many hours play Super Mario Bros I can still hear the music and sound effects in my head when I think about the game. I still remember where all the secret mushrooms are, and tricks on how to get extra lives.

While their fame has perhaps since dwindled somewhat, Mario Bros games are still coming out now all the time for the newer Nintendo consoles. They are still definitely iconic game figures today, but with so many other games available their golden age has ended.

The Mario Bros are probably best known these days for their Mario Cart games. These games breathed a breath of fresh air into the Mario Bros game series, though they are nothing like the original games. Still, they can be a lot of fun, and are designed to be played with friends.

Who knows what the future will bring for the Mario Bros, but their legacy is certainly far from over I’m sure. The Mario Bros are solid gold for Nintendo; just putting their name on a game is enough to ensure at least some profits. Indeed, Nintendo seems to have picked up on this fact, and games that look like they have little or nothing to do with the Mario Bros sometimes get their name brand nonetheless.
